Summary of Incident
On the morning of Wednesday, January 7, 1998, five-year-old Brittany Locklear was abducted while waiting for her school bus. She was a kindergartener at West Hoke Elementary School.
Following an intensive search, her body was found the next day. Her body was located in a drainage ditch next to a farm road, approximately three miles from the site where she was last seen alive.
Investigation Details and Evidence
- Physical evidence was collected from both the abduction site and the body recovery site and sent to the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) Laboratory for processing.
- Investigators focused on the description of the vehicle driven by the suspect.
- After reviewing information and re-interviewing witnesses, investigators believe the offender was driving a full-size pick-up truck of an unknown color.
- Hundreds of leads provided by the public have been investigated.
- The investigation has involved checking DNA samples left behind by the killer.
Current Status and Reward
The case remains unsolved. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) is seeking the public’s help for any information.
A $20,000 reward is currently offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the murder of Brittany Lynn Locklear.
